$37 in ETH fees for a smart contract?

I wanted to stake 13 eth and it costed me 0.016732 ETH ($37) in tx fees from trust wallet. Plus another $18 to stake on rocketfuel. The $18 was necessary but $37 is too much. It's my first time staking eth so didn't want the transction to fail or take long so didn't mess with the fees I didn't want to fuck anything up since idk how gas fees actually work.

Basically what I'm asking is could I have edited the gas fee from trust wallet and pay $5-$10? Or is $37 "a normal fee" to stake 13 ETH using smart contract transaction for staking? Obviously the higher the fee the faster the transaction but did I overpay? By how much? On average. Don't forget, I wanted the transaction to be fast, not more than a few hours. Is $37 over paying for that?
