Forbes: Bitcoin’s quantum challenge is also a coordination problem

A recent Forbes article by Aaron Stanley, “Bitcoin’s Quantum Problem Is Really A Social Problem,” raises an interesting question: can Bitcoin coordinate a post-quantum transition before it becomes urgent?

Post-quantum algorithms already exist. But adopting them means coordinating developers, miners, exchanges, wallet providers and millions of holders. Users would need to move funds to quantum-resistant addresses.

Then there’s the harder question: what happens to coins that never migrate, including lost coins and dormant early wallets? Leaving them vulnerable could eventually allow quantum theft. Freezing them would raise difficult questions about ownership and Bitcoin’s rules.

Today’s quantum computers cannot break Bitcoin’s keys, and nobody knows when that capability will arrive. But uncertainty also makes it difficult to agree on when to act.

For me, this highlights why post-quantum projects with quantum-resistant signatures, deserve a place in the discussion. Starting with that protection avoids this particular migration problem, although adoption and network effects remain separate challenges.
