How is ethereum going to compete with cheaper alternatives?

Today is the first time ive used ethereum for anything meaningful. I want an nft. Ive always used solana, and after todays experience, im not going to continue with my purchase, even when the gas does drop from 400$ a transaction to something more resonable. Its hilarious and im sure the only people using ethereum are og's who were there from the start. I came into crypto just over 2 years ago, i thought eth fees were outrageous then and even more so now. There is no way on earth new blood coming into the crypto ecosystem will use ethereum.
