Inside the Binance accounts internal investigators say helped transfer more than $1 billion to Iran-linked entities: A 79-year-old VIP Chinese trader and a suspected Iranian gold smuggler

In early 2025, an embattled Iranian regime was turning more and more to crypto with a view to thwart sanctions choking its financial system. During this time, a VIP account on Binance registered to a 79-year-old Chinese resident used a collection of transfers to send $439 million value of digital tokens from the crypto change to an outdoor wallet.

That wallet in turn forwarded a lot of the funds to ones that company investigators would later determine as related to sanctioned organizations linked to Iran like the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Because the investigators detailed in paperwork reviewed by Fortune, it was suspicious for a single aged man to be shifting lots of of tens of millions of dollars. This was particularly the case because the transactions in query concerned shifting Tether stablecoins on the blockchain Tron—a cost technique favored by cyber-criminals and cash launderers.

Surprisingly, although, the transfers triggered no instant alarms for Binance, which had agreed in late 2023 to impose a rigorous collection of compliance procedures as part of a $4.three billion plea agreement with the U.S. government.
